NEEDED: C a p e R o m a i n N W R Every year more loggerhead sea turtles nest on Cape Island in Cape Romain NWR than anywhere else in SC. However, this island is a true barrier island and its beaches and dunes have been decimated by the storms of last year. So, many of the nests are created by the female turtles below the high tide line and must be moved into "hatcheries". These are areas of 50' x 100' or 100' x 100' built of chicken wire and PVC pipe. This construction also keeps raccoons and other predators from ravaging the nests. We need 3-5 people to go with refuge personnel for three days in late April to Cape Island and build these hatcheries. You will be working with shovels, wire-cutters and riding ATV-pulled trailers to locations on the beach where the hatcheries will be built. Cape is a beautiful wild island - no facilities - no shade. Volunteers will meet refuge personnel in Awendaw, ride in refuge trucks to McClellanville and then take the refuge boat for the 20 minute ride to Cape. Each day will be about 8 hours long from the time you leave Awendaw and until you return there. Call Karen Beshears 843-884-7539 email: kbeshears@earthlink.net
We need an assistant to the Program Chairperson who has some freedom to help with communication during business hours (typically 9:00 to 5:00). It would include contacting some speakers and helping with publicity to announce our programs in the local media. We can have committee meetings or correspond by phone or e-mail. There would also be an opportunity to learn to use the state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment we use at Baruch Auditorium. If you are available to help in any capacity contact Patricia Hazard, 881-3868.
